It depends on the firm and the setup: of 11 prop firms whose own rule pages were checked in October 2026, 4 ban a VPN (virtual private network, an app that routes your traffic through another company's server) while you trade and 3 ban a VPS (virtual private server, a rented data-center computer that runs your platform), while all 4 forex and CFD firms allow a VPN in some form. The bigger gap is order origin: only 3 of the 11 say anything about a remote or cloud server placing orders for you, and two ban outside cloud services.

Key takeaway

Prop firm VPN and VPS rules split by firm and by setup. Of 11 firms whose own pages were read in October 2026, Topstep, TradeDay and Elite Trader Funding ban both a VPN and a VPS, Alpha Futures bans only a VPN that hides your IP while trading, though it bans both at KYC, and all 4 forex and CFD firms allow a VPN in some form. Only Topstep, FundedNext and Elite Trader Funding address cloud servers placing orders, so at the other 8, get that answer in writing.

What counts as a VPN, a VPS or a remote server in prop firm rules?

Prop firm rules can cover four setups, and a firm may treat each differently: a VPN on the device you trade from, a VPS that runs your platform, a remote or cloud server that places orders for you, and the connection you use for purchase, KYC (know-your-customer identity checks), the dashboard and payouts. The third is the easiest to miss, and it is the same question as where the order-routing process runs.

With a VPN, the firm sees the VPN's exit address; with a VPS, a fixed data-center address; with a cloud copier, follower orders arrive from the copier's data center, not from your device. Your browser on the firm's website can show yet another address.

FOUR SETUPS, FOUR DIFFERENT CLAUSES SETUP DEVICE VIA THE FIRM SEES FIRM FIRMS WITH A RULE VPN while trading moves: your address VPN exit another company VPN exit address platform VPS runs your platform moves: your platform VPS runs platform data-center address platform Cloud server places orders moves: your order your address master copies cloud copier data center copier's data center followers Purchase, KYC, dashboard, payout moves: your login browser e.g. Private Relay the browser's address website 11 of 11 11 of 11 3 of 11 8 silent 1 conditional, 2 banned 6 of 11, 1 reported 5 silent Solid arrow: traffic the firm receives; dashed: screen or copy link. Each lane moves something different (your address, your platform, your order, your login), so each answers to a different sentence of a firm's rules.

Which prop firms allow a VPN or a VPS?

Of 11 firms checked in October 2026, Topstep, TradeDay, Elite Trader Funding and Alpha Futures ban a VPN while you trade, and the first three also ban a VPS. The rest allow one or both, often with a condition that matters more than the verdict.

Computed by Phoenix Technologies from each firm's help-center, rules or terms pages, read on 5 October 2026; method: each cell is allowed (general conditions only), conditional (a specific extra requirement such as a static IP, prior notice, a fee, a size limit or a country exception), banned, or silent (the pages say nothing), then counted per column.

Futures firms are the strict side, one more way futures and CFD prop firms differ: a VPN is banned at 4 of 7 futures firms and at 0 of the 4 forex and CFD firms. Rules change often, so check the firm's current page before buying.

Stack the four columns as bars of 11 firms and the gap shows. All 11 address VPNs and VPS, but the cloud-execution bar is 8 silent firms, 2 bans and 1 condition, and 13 of the 44 cells are silent. No firm gives an outright yes on cloud execution or at KYC, dashboard or payout.

Three claims fail here. Not all firms ban VPNs: 7 of the 11 allow one. Topstep allows them under no condition, whatever some lists say; its Prohibited Conduct page reads: "Do not use a VPN. VPNs, proxy services, TOR, geo-location obfuscation, and other identity-masking services are not permitted at Topstep." And FTMO does not ban them: its travel and VPN FAQ, updated August 24, 2026, says "The use of VPN/VPS is also generally allowed." apart from US locations on MetaTrader, cTrader and TradingView.

FTMO also runs two rules under one brand: its futures FAQ, updated August 31, 2026, has no US exception. FundedNext attributes its own ban on MT4 and MT5 access from US addresses to "MetaQuotes' regional limitations".

A VPS is not automatically the safe alternative. Alpha Futures alone allows one while banning a VPN, in its own words: "The use of VPS is permitted in your trading, however the use of VPN attempting to hide or change you IP address is not." FundedNext says "VPS usage is not permitted on account sizes of $50,000 and above" and allows it below that only for a fee and for trade-executing Expert Advisors; automation has its own separate rules.

Funded Futures Family's earlier FAQ banned VPNs, proxies and VPS; that page no longer loads, and its rules page, last reviewed September 1, 2026, says "VPN/VPS is permitted at your own risk." Older summaries still repeat the ban; firms whose pages could not be read are left out rather than guessed.

How does a prop firm know you are using a VPN or VPS?

A firm sees the IP address behind every login and order, and IP-intelligence databases label each address by type, so a VPN exit, a VPS and a cloud server usually read as data-center addresses rather than a home connection. Topstep acts at the door, telling users who hit "an Error 403 Forbidden message" to "disable your VPN or proxy and try again."

No firm checked names its IP-data vendor. MaxMind's GeoIP documentation lists 15 user types an address can carry. It notes that a VPN provider that does not register its subnets under its own name will likely be flagged only as a hosting provider.

Follow seven connections to their likely labels: home broadband reads "residential", a phone hotspot "cellular", an office laptop behind a security proxy "business", and Safari with iCloud Private Relay "consumer_privacy_network". A VPN exit, a VPS and a cloud copier's server can all read "hosting".

WHAT A RISK TEAM SEES CONNECTION IP-DATA LABEL (MAXMIND USER TYPE) AT THE FIRM home broadband phone hotspot office laptop, proxy Safari, Private Relay commercial VPN VPS cloud copier server residential home ISP address cellular often carrier NAT, gateway city business proxy's data-center exit consumer_privacy_network shared relay, coarse city level hosting data centers: VPS and cloudservers, plus VPN exits notregistered as a VPN 3 setups, one label login log every login and order risk review plus the firm's wording same label, Alpha Futures: VPS allowed VPN hiding your IP banned MaxMind lists 15 user types; the likely ones are shown, not certain ones. No firm checked names its IP-data vendor.
Three of seven everyday connections can land in the same hosting bucket, so the address alone cannot separate an allowed VPS from a banned VPN; the firm's wording does.
Three different setups can arrive under one hosting label; only the firm's wording separates the allowed one from the banned ones.

IP is one signal among several: Elite Trader Funding's terms reserve the right to audit "IP address logs and device fingerprints", and the rest of the toolkit is in how firms link accounts by IP and timing. No firm checked publishes its false-positive rate, and no page checked caps the number of IP addresses per day.

Is a cloud trade copier treated like a VPS by prop firms?

At Topstep, in effect yes: it bans any server that places, modifies or cancels orders, which is what a cloud copier does for follower accounts. FundedNext treats the two differently: a VPS copier you run is allowed between your own Challenge accounts, while an outside cloud service is not. Only these two and Elite Trader Funding, of the 11, address remote or cloud execution at all.

Topstep's TopstepX API Access page lets a private server store data, backtest, log and run a read-only dashboard, but not place, modify or cancel orders or relay them for you: "The line is order transmission: your server can watch and record, but it cannot trade." At Topstep, the firm's built-in copier is the route.

FundedNext's copy-trading rule, updated September 18, 2026, says "Using a VPS-based trade copier is permitted, but only between a trader's own FundedNext Challenge Accounts" and "Using external cloud-based copy trading services, such as Social Trader Tools, Traders Connect, or Duplikum, is not allowed." Its VPS page still excludes accounts of $50,000 and above. It also bars copying between a FundedNext Account (the post-challenge stage) and any other FundedNext account; other CFD firms' copier rules are in forex firms' copier and EA rules.

Elite Trader Funding's VPN and IP-masking policy bans masking with one opening: "The sole exception is an ETF-approved partner service operating within an approved IP range." Its example is an approved copier on cloud infrastructure whose provider publishes its IP ranges, the clearest statement among the pages checked that a cloud copier reaches a firm from data-center addresses and that a firm can allow specific ones.

That is the clause to read before connecting Thor, the copier made by this blog's publisher: it runs 24/7 on cloud servers. Compatibility lists, ours included, describe platform connections, not firm permission. No firm page here names ours as approved. Read plainly, FundedNext's ban on external cloud-based copy services covers a copier like ours on its CFD accounts.

Can a VPN allowed for trading still cause trouble at KYC or payout?

Yes: two of the 11 firms ban at KYC what they allow on the platform. Alpha Futures permits a VPS for trading, yet its KYC article says "The use of VPS/VPN during the KYC process is not permitted." AquaFutures allows a VPN but adds that "VPNs should never be used during the KYC process".

Lay an account's life on one line: website, KYC, dashboard, platform, payout. Topstep answers VPN or proxy traffic with an Error 403, Alpha Futures and AquaFutures mark KYC, and an aggregator reports, unconfirmed, that Funded Futures Family bars VPN dashboard logins. Then 7 firms ban or condition a VPN on the platform, TradeDay and AquaFutures check again at payout or funding, and Elite Trader Funding's ban spans every step.

WHERE FIRMS CHECK YOUR CONNECTION Topstep: Error 403 1 firm website and sign-up Alpha Futures AquaFutures 2 firms KYC identity check Funded Futures Family 1 reported dashboard account area Topstep TradeDay Elite Trader Funding Alpha Futures: VPN FTMO: US location FundedNext Alpha Capital Group 7 firms platform login and each order TradeDay AquaFutures 2 firms payout or move to live TradeDay: VPN off, then a full trading dayfrom the registeredlocation, before funded-live moves, payouts andthe $10,000 gross profitreview SAME FIRM, TWO ANSWERS Alpha Futures VPS, VPN banned VPS allowed AquaFutures VPN banned VPN allowed checks again Elite Trader Funding: the ban covers any connection, at every step Red: a firm's page bans VPN or masking at that step; amber: a condition; dashed: aggregator report, unconfirmed.
A setup allowed at the platform can still fail at the checkpoint before it or after it, and the last check arrives exactly when a payout is due.

TradeDay's IP-masking article is the most specific of the 11. Before a move to a Funded Live account, on Quick Pay and Fast Pass payout requests, and at the Quick Pay Funded Sim's $10,000 gross profit review, a trader using IP-masking software must switch it off and "trade for a full day in line with how they have been trading during their evaluation or funded account, from the location registered with TradeDay". A VPN used through an evaluation is not harmless once you pass: the check comes when money is due.

The stated reason is law, not trading style. TradeDay cites US anti-money-laundering and sanctioned-country requirements, and Topstep's terms exclude anyone accessing it from a country under comprehensive US sanctions. The US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) showed why in its December 2020 settlement with BitGo, a digital-asset firm: $98,830 for 183 apparent violations, stating that "BitGo had reason to know that these users were located in sanctioned jurisdictions based on Internet Protocol (IP) address data".

Can you trade your prop account from another country?

Usually yes, without a VPN, if the country is not on the firm's restricted list. Topstep lists 34 ineligible entries (two, Crimea and Chinese Military Companies, are not countries) and 25 countries limited to its Express Funded Account, and its advice for travel through an ineligible country is "Don't trade while there."

AquaFutures wants notice instead: it calls a vacation in a restricted country acceptable and strongly recommends telling support first. Alpha Capital Group treats frequent IP changes between countries "in a manner that is not geographically feasible" as a violation, so a VPN hopping between exit countries looks worse than the trip.

Why do innocent connections get flagged as a VPN?

Because ordinary connections often share an address or exit far from you: carrier-grade NAT (one public address shared by many mobile subscribers), corporate security proxies, iCloud Private Relay and hotel Wi-Fi can all resemble masking. No firm page checked names carrier NAT, corporate proxies or hotel Wi-Fi; TradeDay alone names Private Relay, and bans it.

ConnectionWhat the firm seesWhy it can look wrongWhat to keep
Mobile data or a phone hotspotOne address shared by many subscribers, placed at the carrier's gatewayA city you are not in; strangers' failed logins on your addressCarrier name and the device's WAN address
Work laptop behind a proxy such as ZscalerAn exit address in the proxy's data centerA data-center address, like a VPNEmployer's security software name; better, a personal device
Safari with iCloud Private RelayA relay address shared by several users, coarse city levelBanned by name at TradeDayPrivate Relay off for the firm's sites
Hotel or airport Wi-Fi abroadA shared address in another countryA location jump between loginsBooking and travel dates; notice where the firm asks

IETF RFC 6269 (2011) says "a subscriber behind a CGN geo-locates to wherever the prefix of the CGN appears to be", often another city. A router or phone WAN address between 100.64.0.0 and 100.127.255.255, the 4,194,304 addresses RFC 6598 reserves for carrier NAT, shows you share one. Zscaler's white paper says servers see "a public-egress IP address from the Zscaler data center", the software one trader suspected in a payout denied over alleged VPN use.

Private Relay is only partly harmless. Apple's guidance for network operators notes that "many Private Relay users may be assigned to a single relay IP address", and MaxMind does not class those addresses as anonymous. Yet TradeDay bans "Apple's Private Relay service" by name and Topstep bans geo-location obfuscation. Apple says the relay covers Safari, DNS and insecure http traffic, so, by our inference, your platform can show your home address while the firm's dashboard in Safari shows a relay address.

Households share addresses too: AquaFutures says two traders on one home IP "might be flagged", and caps on accounts per household are a separate rule.

What should you check before using a VPN, VPS or copier at a prop firm?

Check four clauses at every firm you trade (VPN, VPS, cloud execution, and the KYC and payout checks) before you buy or connect anything, alongside the other checks before you pay a firm. Take one illustrative trader with a Topstep account, an Alpha Futures account and a $50,000 FundedNext CFD account who wants a VPS, travels with a VPN and is weighing a cloud copier: 3 firms x 4 clauses = 12 answers.

  1. VPS. Topstep bans it and Alpha Futures permits it. FundedNext excludes "$50,000 and above", so this account misses by zero dollars. Usable at 1 of 3.
  2. VPN abroad. Topstep and Alpha Futures ban it; FundedNext allows it outside restricted countries and away from US addresses on MT4 and MT5. Usable at 1 of 3, a different firm.
  3. Cloud copier. Banned at Topstep, and at FundedNext for external cloud-based services. Alpha Futures' multi-account guide, updated July 12, 2026, says "If you use any third-party copier between your own accounts, you do so at your own risk" but not where it may run, and the firm separately bans "AI, bots, and other automated trading mechanisms": one question to put in writing. Usable at 1 of 3 at most.
  4. KYC. Alpha Futures bans a VPS or VPN there, so verify from home at all three.

The only setup all three allow is a personal device on the home connection with the VPN off.

Abroad: is the country on the firm's ineligible list? If yes, do not trade there unless the firm's page allows it, as AquaFutures does with notice; if not, trade without a VPN and keep travel proof. Need a server: a VPS is out at Topstep, TradeDay, Elite Trader Funding and FundedNext from $50,000, while cloud execution is out at Topstep and, for outside cloud services, at FundedNext, limited to approved partners at Elite Trader Funding and unanswered at the other 8.

TRAVELLING OR NEED A SERVER? ABROAD Is the country on thefirm's ineligible list? Every branch ends at a clause you can quote or a written answer from the firm; none ends at an assumption.
  • If a firm bans VPNs, switch off the VPN, Private Relay and browser privacy extensions for its website and dashboard too.
  • If you travel, check the destination against the firm's list before you leave, and tell support first where it asks.
  • If a firm allows a VPS, keep one fixed address in one country, then see choosing VPS location and specs.
  • If a firm is silent on cloud execution, email support naming the copier and keep the reply.
  • If you are flagged, answer with your records; how to dispute a network flag covers the escalation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a VPN to buy a prop firm challenge?

Not at Topstep, whose ban on VPNs and proxies covers its website as well as trading. Most other firms checked write no separate purchase rule: FTMO's FAQ and its Challenge Terms, both updated in August 2026, contain no VPN clause for buying or KYC. Clause 9.4.2 of those terms, though, has users agree not to "circumvent geographical restrictions of availability", which by our reading covers a VPN used from a country FTMO does not serve. Alpha Futures and AquaFutures do ban a VPN during KYC, which follows soon after purchase, so buying and verifying from your normal connection keeps the records consistent.

What happens if a prop firm catches you using a VPN?

The written penalties run up to account closure and a permanent ban, depending on the firm. Topstep's Terms of Use say VPN or VPS use "may result in account termination and forfeiture of profits", and Elite Trader Funding lists an account reset, forfeiture of profits, account failure and a permanent ban. AquaFutures takes a softer line: it reviews flagged activity and gives you a chance to explain.

What is Apex Trader Funding's VPN policy?

It could not be verified for this article: Apex's help pages returned an access error to automated reading in October 2026, so Apex is not in the table. The same happened with Take Profit Trader, Tradeify's futures help center and FundingPips. Read the firm's current rules page yourself or ask support in writing before you connect a VPN or VPS.

Do Bulenox, My Funded Futures or Lucid Trading allow a VPN?

None of the three has a VPN or VPS rule on the help pages found for this check. A copier vendor reports support correspondence in which Bulenox said it no longer allows VPS, VPNs or tools that alter location, but no Bulenox page found states it, so it is unverified. Lucid Trading's rules say "Automated trading systems and trade copiers are permitted", which is a copier rule, not a network rule.

Do I have to tell my prop firm before using a VPN or VPS?

At Alpha Capital Group, yes: a VPN or VPS is allowed only on a static dedicated IP and after emailing support with the accounts involved. Its help center warns that use "without prior notification will be flagged by our security systems" and leads to account closure. None of the other firms checked asks for notice in advance, though Tradeify FX may ask for proof of a VPN or VPS setup when logins come from different or shared IPs.

Can I trade my prop account from my work laptop?

At FundedNext, no: its device and network policy requires "personal devices exclusively owned by the trader". Elsewhere it adds risk even where it is not banned, because a corporate security proxy, where one is installed, sends traffic out through its own data centers and the firm sees a data-center address instead of your home connection. A personal device on your own connection avoids both problems.

Is remote desktop software allowed at prop firms?

No firm page checked for this article names remote-desktop software. Topstep's API page states "All trading activity must originate from your personal device." and bans remote servers, so controlling a machine elsewhere conflicts with its wording. At other firms, describe the exact setup to support and keep the written answer.

Can my VPS be in a different country from where I live?

It can prompt a review. AquaFutures says a VPS hosted in another country "may trigger a review", and if it flags the setup, it contacts you and gives you a chance to confirm it. Where a firm asks for prior notice of a VPS, as Alpha Capital Group does, include the server's country when you write.

Can a prop firm see my exact location from my IP address?

Not precisely, and for shared addresses not always the right city. Apple says a Private Relay address represents the user's coarse city-level location by default, and the IETF notes that carrier NAT users often geolocate to a different city. Firms that care about location also use KYC documents and, at TradeDay, a full trading day from the registered location.

Does FundedNext Futures follow the same VPN and VPS rule?

Unknown: FundedNext's futures help center could not be read for this check, so the FundedNext row covers its CFD accounts only. Do not assume the CFD rule's $50,000 VPS cutoff applies to futures accounts; ask support in writing.
