Neither is proven faster: no vendor or independent test publishes a comparable latency figure, so choose the rail that runs the software you trade from. Tradovate (a cloud futures broker platform used from a browser, app or TradingView) suits TradingView, Mac and phone traders; Rithmic (a gateway that desktop platforms log into) suits Bookmap, Sierra Chart and Quantower, with one session per login by default. As of October 2026, 7 of the 12 futures prop firms we checked offer both, and Topstep offers neither.

Key takeaway

No vendor or independent test publishes a comparable latency figure for Rithmic and Tradovate, so speed should not decide it. Front-end reach and sessions do: Tradovate runs from TradingView, a browser, a Mac app or a phone, Bookmap says Rithmic carries full-depth market-by-order CME data, and a Rithmic login defaults to one session. Of 12 futures prop firms checked in October 2026, 7 offer both rails, and Tradeify will not move a Tradesea (Rithmic) account to Tradovate without a new purchase.

What is the actual difference between Rithmic and Tradovate?

Rithmic is a pipe and Tradovate is a whole platform. With Rithmic, your trading software runs on your own computer and sends orders through Rithmic's gateway to CME Globex; with Tradovate, the software and your working orders live on Tradovate's servers, and the screen in front of you is a window onto them.

The Tradovate platform page says its "cloud-based platform holds all orders either securely at the exchange or server-side, never on your device", and it supports server-side brackets of up to 10 target and stop levels. On the Rithmic side, R|Trader Pro is Rithmic's own front-end, and TradeDay's Rithmic setup guide lists the gateway as "Chicago Area"; how the Rithmic gateway works covers the plumbing.

Picture two lanes ending at the same exchange. In the top lane, a browser tab, phone app or TradingView panel talks to Tradovate's cloud, where your orders and brackets wait server-side. In the bottom lane, NinjaTrader, Quantower, Sierra Chart or R|Trader Pro runs on your PC and routes through the Rithmic gateway (Chicago Area).

TWO ROUTES TO THE SAME EXCHANGE SOFTWARE LIVES HERE browser phone app TradingView TRADOVATE CLOUD platform + working orders server-side brackets, up to 10 levels orders stay if your device closes SOFTWARE LIVES HERE RUNS ON YOUR PC NinjaTrader Quantower Sierra Chart R|Trader Pro RITHMIC GATEWAY Chicago Area platform-managed stops run only while the app runs CME GLOBEX same exchange Tradovate platform page (up to 10 bracket levels); TradeDay Rithmic setup guide (Chicago Area). Schematic.
Both rails end at the same exchange; the difference is whether your platform and working orders live in Tradovate's cloud or on your own PC.

The practical difference is where logic lives. A Tradovate bracket keeps working if your laptop closes. Logic that a desktop platform manages itself, such as NinjaTrader ATM trailing steps or simulated stops, runs only while that platform runs, which matters most when you copy brackets and trailing stops across platforms.

Is Rithmic faster than Tradovate?

No public evidence says so. Neither Rithmic nor Tradovate publishes a latency measurement you can compare, and we found no independent test with a stated method as of October 2026.

The top-ranking comparisons assert "sub-millisecond" or "microsecond-level" speed for Rithmic without a source. One article by PickMyTrade, titled a "speed test" of Rithmic, ProjectX and Tradovate, reports no latency numbers and no method. No firm or vendor publishes fill-quality or slippage differences between the two rails either.

A scalper who reads the DOM and order flow gains more from the right depth data than from an unmeasured speed claim.

Which platforms work with Rithmic and which with Tradovate?

Tradovate reaches TradingView's trading panel, its own web, Mac, Windows and phone apps, and NinjaTrader. Rithmic reaches a long list of desktop platforms (TradeDay lists 13 under Rithmic, and Bulenox, which names Rithmic as its data provider, advertises "20+ trading platforms") plus R|Trader Pro on web and mobile, but not TradingView's trading panel.

The grid uses vendor pages and the platform lists of the firms we checked.

If TradingView, a Mac or a phone is your main screen, Tradovate is the shorter route; if your edge lives in a desktop order-flow tool, Rithmic is.

Does Rithmic mean NinjaTrader?

Not any more. TradeDay's platform list states: "Please note that we do not support NinjaTrader Desktop with Rithmic accounts." Earn2Trade honoured legacy NinjaTrader accounts on Rithmic only until June 30, 2026, and now provides NinjaTrader through the NinjaTrader-Tradovate unified API. Where NinjaTrader still runs on Rithmic, the NinjaTrader prop-firm connection guide warns: "Only one Rithmic-based connection can be active at a time; you'll need to disconnect and reconnect when switching between Rithmic-based accounts."

NinjaTrader bought Tradovate for $115 million (announced January 12, 2022), and its site now says a Tradovate login, including prop credentials, opens NinjaTrader desktop, web and mobile. Choosing between the two front-ends is covered in Tradovate versus NinjaTrader as front-ends.

Mac, TradingView and automation

Rithmic on a Mac is possible but narrower. TradeDay's setup guide says R|Trader Pro Desktop is Windows only, with a web version for macOS and Linux, and the App Store lists the Rithmic Trader Pro iPad app as compatible with Macs on macOS 12.0 with an Apple M1 chip or later. Third-party platforms are covered in every Mac route we checked.

A Rithmic account reaches TradingView only through third-party webhook bridges; trading prop accounts from TradingView explains the options. Automation is the trap most comparisons miss. Tradovate's API Access article (updated September 16, 2026), as quoted by Autoview, says "Prop firm and evaluation accounts are not eligible for API access", and requires a live funded Tradovate account with at least $1,000 plus the API Access add-on.

On Rithmic, automation is a firm-by-firm rule and Rithmic publishes no policy. Even Topstep's own ProjectX API, at $29 a month, excludes live funded accounts, so read your firm's rules on automated trading first.

Does the market data differ between Rithmic and Tradovate?

For depth-of-book tools, yes. Bookmap says Rithmic delivers full depth with market-by-order data (every individual order event, not totals per price) for CME futures, while Tradovate delivers partial depth to Bookmap.

Bookmap's Rithmic partner page says "Rithmic provides true Market-by-Order (MBO) data for CME futures." Bookmap's Tradovate connection guide says "Tradovate provides partial-depth CME futures data to Bookmap. For full-depth data, consider using an alternative data provider." That statement covers data sent to Bookmap, not Tradovate's own DOM.

Picture the same price ladder drawn twice. On the left, Rithmic into Bookmap: each resting order is its own block, and the ladder runs to the full book. On the right, Tradovate into Bookmap: each price shows one combined size, and only the levels nearest the market appear, with the far asks and far bids missing.

SAME BOOK, TWO DEPTHS IN BOOKMAP RITHMIC INTO BOOKMAP full depth, market-by-order (MBO) TRADOVATE INTO BOOKMAP partial depth, one size per price asks bids asks bids not delivered to Bookmap not delivered to Bookmap each block is one resting order one combined size per price Per Bookmap's Rithmic partner page and Tradovate connection guide. Same illustrative book; no source publishes level counts.
Bookmap describes Rithmic as full depth with individual orders and Tradovate as partial depth, which only matters if your method reads the book itself.

No primary source says whether Tradovate aggregates trade prints on its own charts. If you read candles and a basic DOM, the difference may never show; if you trade heatmaps or individual orders, it decides the question. The wider comparison is in how the main futures feeds differ.

Why does Rithmic disconnect when you log in on another device?

Because a Rithmic login carries one session by default, and a second direct connection pushes the first one off. The cause is CME market-data billing, not an unreliable feed.

Optimus Futures explained the change in April 2020: "each user will now only be entitled to one session." The broker Edge Clear describes the CME rule behind it, effective May 1, 2020: a trader "who is set up with 3 or more concurrent Rithmic logins be reported as a professional market data subscriber". Each direct connection counts; apps plugged into R|Trader Pro on one PC share a single session.

The table counts sessions for five common setups (illustrative) against the default of 1 and the CME threshold of 3.

Picture a ladder with a line at rung 1 and another at rung 3. Your PC alone sits on rung 1. Open the phone app and you climb to rung 2, over the default line, so the older session drops.

Default 1: Optimus Futures; 3+: Edge Clear.
Opening the phone app puts a default Rithmic login at 2 sessions, one over the limit, which is why the PC drops; plug-in mode brings three tools back to 1.

Two fixes exist. Plug-in mode keeps several tools on one session, and at least one firm sells a second session: DayTraders.com charges $30 a month for an add-on that "allows you to maintain simultaneous access to two devices", expiring at 5:00 PM ET on the last day of the month. Step-by-step setup is in fixes for the one-session limit.

Tradovate is not unlimited either. Elite Trader Funding says Tradovate web, mobile and desktop each count as a session and warns: "In TradingView, each browser tab counts as a separate session". Topstep's help center says of TopstepX: "Exchange rules limit you to 1 device/browser at a time". Tradovate's own support site would not load for us, so its exact cap is not stated here.

Which prop firms offer Rithmic, Tradovate or both in 2026?

Of the 12 futures prop firms we checked in October 2026, 7 offer both rails, 1 offers only Rithmic, 2 offer only Tradovate and 2 offer neither. Rithmic is available at 8 and Tradovate at 9; check the firm's current page before buying.

Picture the 12 firms as one stream that splits four ways: 7 offer both, 1 offers Rithmic only, 2 offer Tradovate only and 2 offer neither. The sample is the 12 firms we could verify, not the market, and no firm publishes how many traders use each rail.

Most firms in the sample let you choose, so the decision usually sits with you at checkout, not with the firm.

The insider detail: Take Profit Trader, TradeDay and Lucid group Tradovate, NinjaTrader and TradingView under a "CQG" heading, so "CQG" on those pages means the Tradovate route. Two common claims fail the check. Lucid is not Rithmic-only: its support page lists 3 CQG and 9 Rithmic platforms and says "All listed platforms work with all Lucid account types." And Bulenox and Alpha Futures show that not every firm besides Topstep offers Tradovate.

What happened to ProjectX, and how did the rails change in 2026?

ProjectX, the third platform some futures prop firms used, stopped serving most outside firms after February 28, 2026, and Topstep now runs only its own TopstepX. Rithmic and Tradovate now carry 10 of the 12 firms we checked.

ProjectX's homepage notice reads: "we've made the decision to wind down our ProjectX third-party service offering for most of our partners." It promised support for those partners "through February 28, 2026". Finance Magnates reported the decision on November 15, 2025, citing compliance reporting, oversight and audit requirements, 105 days before the cutoff. Topstep's help center, updated July 20, 2026, now says TopstepX is the only available trading platform. The older third rail is compared in Rithmic versus ProjectX.

Lay the dates on one line from November 15, 2025 to August 10, 2026. After the ProjectX report come Elite Trader Funding's Rithmic charge on January 28, 2026, the ProjectX cutoff on February 28, Tradeify's Rithmic-based Tradesea in March and, 122 days after the cutoff, Earn2Trade's June 30 end of NinjaTrader on Rithmic. Alpha Futures wrote: "As of July 12, 2026, NinjaTrader and Tradovate are no longer offered for new Alpha Futures accounts." Topstep's help article was updated on July 20. TradeDay switched Rithmic on 29 days after Alpha's change, on August 10.

Firms added and removed rails from January to August 2026, so the platform page on the day you buy matters more than any comparison written months earlier.

TradeDay's announcement stressed that nothing else moved: "Same pricing. Same evaluation structure. Same standards." A rail offered at checkout can be added or withdrawn within months.

Does Rithmic cost more than Tradovate at a prop firm?

Sometimes. Of the firms checked, Elite Trader Funding charges $45 a month per active Rithmic account, and DayTraders.com sells a second Rithmic login for $30 a month; TradeDay says adding Rithmic changed nothing about its pricing.

Elite Trader Funding's pricing notice applies the charge to new accounts from January 28, 2026 and existing accounts from March 1, 2026, "Due to recent policy updates from the CME Group affecting data feed providers". We found no CME document naming that policy. The charge scales with account count (counts illustrative):

Rithmic accounts at Elite Trader FundingMonthlyAnnual
1$45$540
3$135$1,620
5$225$2,700

Computed by Phoenix Technologies; method: accounts x $45 x 12. A $30 second-session add-on adds $360 a year. Both are one firm's prices, as of October 2026, not market rates; market data fees on funded accounts covers what other firms charge for data.

Rithmic or Tradovate: which should you pick, and can you switch later?

Pick by the screen you will trade from, and pick before you pay, because the rail can be fixed at checkout. Tradeify's platform guide is explicit that you "cannot switch to Tradovate Web without buying a new account, because the data routing and order flow are different".

  • If you trade from TradingView's panel, a browser, a Mac without Windows or your phone, choose Tradovate.
  • If you need Bookmap full depth and market-by-order data, Sierra Chart, Quantower or ATAS, choose Rithmic and keep one live session, or use plug-in mode.
  • If you want NinjaTrader Desktop at TradeDay or Earn2Trade, choose Tradovate, because neither runs it on Rithmic now.
  • If you will run a phone and a PC on one Rithmic login, check whether the firm sells a second session before you buy.
  • If you plan to automate, confirm in writing that your firm allows it; Tradovate's API excludes prop accounts.
  • If you hold 3 or more Rithmic accounts at Elite Trader Funding, price in $135 a month or more.

Accounts at several firms often mean both rails. If you lead from one account and follow on others, Thor's platform list includes both Rithmic and Tradovate, and it copies between any combination of supported platforms; copying between Rithmic and Tradovate accounts covers the setup. If you trade one account on one screen, you need no copier: you need the right rail.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rithmic or Tradovate better for scalping?

Neither has a measured speed advantage you can verify, because no public latency or slippage comparison exists. Scalpers should choose by tools instead: if you read heatmaps or individual orders in Bookmap, note that Bookmap describes Tradovate's feed to it as partial depth and Rithmic's as full depth. If you scalp from a DOM in a browser or TradingView, Tradovate covers it.

Does Apex Trader Funding use Rithmic or Tradovate?

Both, plus WealthCharts, according to a third-party check by PropTradingVibes dated August 10, 2026. Apex's own help pages returned errors when we checked in October 2026, so we could not confirm the list or its switching rule from Apex itself. Confirm on the checkout page before you pay.

Can you still trade Rithmic or Tradovate at Topstep?

Not for new accounts, as far as Topstep's own pages show. Topstep's help center, updated July 20, 2026, says TopstepX is the only available trading platform. Some secondary sites say older Rithmic or Tradovate accounts can still be traded, but no Topstep page we found confirms that.

Does MyFundedFutures offer Rithmic?

Rithmic is not on its list. The MyFundedFutures help center lists NinjaTrader, Tradovate, TradingView, Quantower and ATAS among its platforms, but does not name the data feed behind each one.

Can you trade a Rithmic account on an iPad?

Yes. Rithmic LLC publishes Rithmic Trader Pro, the mobile version of R|Trader Pro, for iPhone and iPad. The App Store also lists it as compatible with Macs running macOS 12.0 with an Apple M1 chip or later; that compatibility label comes from Apple, not from a Rithmic statement.

Does Bulenox offer Tradovate?

Not on its platform list as of October 2026. Bulenox advertises "20+ trading platforms" and names Rithmic as its data provider. Check the firm's current page before buying.

How much notice did prop firms get before ProjectX ended third-party support?

About 105 days from the first press report. Finance Magnates reported the decision on November 15, 2025, and ProjectX supported sunsetting partners through February 28, 2026. ProjectX said the wind-down covered most, not all, of its partners.
